A thoughtfully assembled jewelry making starter kit gives beginners enough tools and materials to start creating without buying supplies they may never use. The best approach is to choose a few reliable tools, versatile beads, essential findings, and suitable stringing materials that work together across several projects.
Beginners can make bracelets, necklaces, earrings, charms, and simple wire-wrapped designs with a relatively small collection of supplies. Crystal Findings makes it easier to build a coordinated kit with Gold-filled beads and findings, sterling silver components, crystal beads, charms, wire, chain, and jewelry-making tools.
Essential Tools and Beginner Jewelry Making Supplies
A few dependable hand tools can handle most beginner projects.
Round-nose pliers are especially useful for earrings and wire-wrapped components, while chain-nose pliers provide control when attaching findings. Cushioned handles may reduce hand fatigue, and smooth jaws are less likely to mark delicate wire or metal components.
Choosing Beads for Beginner Projects
A starter kit should contain a coordinated selection of beads rather than a large assortment of unrelated styles.
Gold-filled beads can be combined with crystals, pearls, gemstones, and silver components. Small Gold-filled beads work well as spacers or accents, while sterling silver and Bali-style silver beads offer additional texture and contrast.
Beginners should check bead size and hole diameter before ordering. The selected beads must fit the wire, cord, headpins, or eye pins used in the project. Starting with familiar shapes and two or three coordinating colors makes designing easier.
Findings Needed to Finish Jewelry
Findings are the small components used to connect, secure, and finish jewelry.
A beginner kit may include:
Jump rings for attaching clasps, charms, pendants, and chain
These components can be selected in Gold-filled, sterling silver, or another coordinating finish. Using the same finish throughout a project creates a more balanced appearance.
Jump rings should be opened by twisting the ends sideways rather than pulling them apart. Headpins and eye pins can be finished with loops using round-nose pliers, making them useful for earrings, charms, and linked designs.
Selecting Wire, Cord, Chain, and Thread
The right stringing material depends on the project.
Chain for necklaces, bracelets, charms, and extenders
Flexible beading wire is normally secured with crimps and a clasp. Elastic cord is convenient for beginner bracelets, while jewelry wire is available in different gauges for shaping and wrapping.
Chain is useful for pendant necklaces, charm bracelets, and layered designs. Its links should be large enough to fit the selected jump rings, clasps, and charms.
Making Sure Supplies Work Together
Before starting a project, beginners should confirm that the components are compatible.
Bead holes must fit the chosen wire, cord, thread, or pins.
Crimp beads should match the diameter of the beading wire.
Jump rings must fit through chain links, clasps, and charms.
Clasps should support the weight of the finished piece.
Metal finishes should coordinate throughout the design.
Planning the project before ordering helps prevent missing components and reduces unnecessary purchases.
Easy Jewelry Projects for Beginners
Simple projects help beginners practise basic techniques.
Good first projects include:
A stretch bracelet with crystal pearls and Gold-filled spacers
A pendant necklace using chain, jump rings, and a clasp
Drop earrings with crystal beads, headpins, and ear wires
A personalized bracelet with alphabet beads
A charm bracelet with chain and decorative charms
A beaded necklace finished with crimps and a lobster clasp
These projects introduce measuring, stringing, loop-making, crimping, and secure finishing without requiring advanced tools.
Build Your Collection as Your Skills Grow
Specialty tools such as crimping pliers, wire jigs, bead reamers, ring mandrels, and nylon-jaw pliers can be added later. Beginners can also expand into additional wire gauges, chains, charms, crystal pearls, Gold-filled beads, and matching findings as their preferred style develops.
Crystal Findings offers supplies for hobbyists, designers, resellers, and wholesalers throughout North America. Its product range makes it easy to start with essential components and add coordinating beads, findings, tools, wire, chain, and decorative elements over time.
Shop Crystal Findings to build a dependable jewelry making starter kit with Gold-filled beads, crystal beads, sterling silver components, findings, tools, and beginner jewelry making supplies.
In our last post on gold-filled beads, we promised to cover even more types of beads in our next post. We’re back, and this time we’ll be covering the fancier gold beads that you can use to take your holiday gift projects to the next level. Ready to dive even deeper into the world of gold-filled beads? Let’s get started.
6. Gold Filled Fancy Round Beads
Gold-filled fancy round beads, with added facets, stripes, and textures, surpass the beauty of plain gold-filled round beads. These distinctive spheres offer a captivating allure, each type being unique with numerous options available. Ideal for crafting impactful jewelry, these beads demand attention and can serve as accent pieces alongside more elaborate elements like pendants or charms. Additionally, they make excellent base materials for various beading projects and can subtly enhance designs when paired with simple plain gold-filled beads.
7. Gold-Filled Charms
Gold-filled charms are technically not beads, but they are an integral part of many beading projects all the same. These small bits of shiny golden metal come in the shape of suns, cats, dolphins, seashells, and much more. If you can imagine it, there’s probably a charm version of it available!
Gold-filled charms are a classic way to add some sophisticated playfulness to jewelry or sewing projects. Many crafters purchase many different charms to create charm bracelets that match the recipient’s tastes and interests. They can also be added to necklaces, earrings, bookmarks, keyrings, zipper pulls, Christmas stockings, and much more.
8. Gold Filled Drop Beads
Gold-filled drop beads are long slender gold beads with a hole in the tapered end. They come in a range of different shapes and sizes, with most being roughly teardrop-shaped. They may be smooth and shiny or accentuated with textural elements like patterns and grooves for decoration.
Gold-filled drop beads are often used to create a pendant effect on smaller items like beaded earrings. They can also be used as embellishments on embroidery projects or to create a fringe-like effect on necklaces and bracelets. Their unusual shape really makes them stand out!
9. Gold-Filled Cap Beads
Cap beads are special shaped beads that can be used to add some extra flair to one or both sides of a special bead, charm, or stone on a piece of jewelry. They typically work best when applied to round items, but some are shaped to accommodate long beads and stones as well.
Cap beads can be used to great effect in almost any piece, but they should be used sparingly. Try adding them to the pendant bead on the end of some beaded earrings or to the accent beads on a bracelet. You’ll be amazed at how much such a simple addition can make those focal elements pop.
10. Gold Filled Stardust Beads
Gold-filled stardust beads are beads with a fine pebbled texture applied to their surface. They offer a more delicate and luxurious appearance compared to your typical twisted or corrugated texture and are perfect for adding a little sparkle to your holiday projects.
Because stardust beads come in all shapes and sizes, they can be used for almost any purpose you can think of. They work especially well when placed alongside plainer beads that don’t draw as much attention to themselves. These simple companion beads give stardust beads the room they need to shine.

We’ll talk about what they look like, whether they come in different sizes or textures, and how to use each of them to their best advantage this holiday season.
1. Gold Filled Round Beads
Gold-filled round beads are simple round golden beads. They come in a few different sizes and are sometimes textured to add visual interest, but plain ones are also very common.
Gold-filled round beads are perhaps the most versatile type of bead available. You’ll want to buy them in bulk if you plan on doing any extensive work with gold-filled beads. You can use them in any of your projects from jewelry making. They’re so simple and understated that they won’t take over the piece, but instead lend it a subtle touch of luxury. They’re also great when paired with other luxury materials like Swarovski crystals.
2. Gold Filled Rice Beads
Gold-filled rice beads are long oval-shaped golden beads. Fittingly, most of them resemble large grains of rice. Some are very long and slender while others are shorter and bulkier, closer to a round bead in appearance. They are available in both plain and textured varieties.
Rice beads are often used instead of round beads when a beader wants to create a slimmer and more delicate piece. Like gold-filled round beads, gold-filled rice beads can be used in almost every project you can think of and offer a pleasantly upscale look.
3. Gold Filled Curved Tube Beads
Gold-filled curved tube beads are long, slightly curved beads that somewhat resemble pieces of dried macaroni. They are often twisted, corrugated, or otherwise textured to give them a little more visual interest.
Curved tube beads are used when a beader wants to simulate the appearance of an unbroken band of metal, usually for a necklace or bracelet. They can also be used as spacer beads to separate showier elements like charms or rose crystal beads. For obvious reasons, you should avoid using these beads unless you want a curved shape in your final design. Rice beads or interlocking beads can be used to create a similar effect without the curve.
4. Gold Filled Saucer Beads
Gold-filled saucer beads are shaped like large rounded discs, making them look a bit like a flying saucer with a hole on the top. They are significantly larger than your standard round bead and come in a variety of smooth and textured options.
These beads are great for accenting chunkier pieces, especially bracelets. Adding a single saucer bead between basic round or rice beads immediately draws the eye to the saucer bead and can give the piece some subtle visual interest, especially if the saucer bead is textured. Some beaders also use them alone to create a thicker version of a basic round bead piece.
5. Gold Filled Interlock Beads
Gold-filled interlock beads are beads that are made to fit together when placed side by side on a string or wire. When they are carefully placed in an unbroken line, a beader can use interlock beads to create a piece that looks and feels uniquely smooth and almost seamless.
These beads are great for creating thick yet pliable sections of gold material, so use them for projects where this is the goal. They make stunning necklaces and bracelets but should not be used with many non-interlocking beads that could spoil the effect.

November’s stone of the month is the stunning, scintillating topaz. This distinctive buttery orange gem is the most common birthstone for November babies, but anyone can appreciate its beauty and allure.
This month, it’s time to try using this gemstone in your own jewelry-making work. Let’s talk about what this gem is, what makes it special, and how you can use it to great effect in all of the items you make.
What Is Topaz?
Topaz is a silicate gemstone that can be found all over the world. It’s naturally colorless when it contains no impurities. When impurities are present, it may look blue, pale green, red, purple, orange, yellow, or brown.
The classic topaz color used in jewelry and other trinkets is a rich brownish-orange. This color is similar to citrine, another orange gemstone that happens to be the alternate birthstone for November. However, topaz is the rarer and more valuable of the two.
Topaz jewelry is a great gift for anyone born in this blustery month. It’s a gorgeous addition for both everyday and formal outfits – and because its golden coloring is so close to neutral shades, it’s easy to wear with almost any outfit you can think of. This versatility has made topaz necklaces, bracelets, and earrings staple items in many a person’s wardrobes.
Crafting with Topaz
So how can you put topaz to work in your jewelry-making projects? The easiest way is to incorporate our topaz beads and pendants into your work. Our range of bead jewelry supplies includes many topaz products.
Topaz’s near-neutral coloring comes in handy here too, allowing you to match it with a wide variety of different beads to create varied looks. Complement its richness with gold-filled beads, bring out its vivacity with aquamarine beads, or harmonize its natural beauty with some understated stone beads – it’s all up to you.
If topaz’s classic amber color is too subdued for you, we also have Swarovski crystal topaz beads and Swarovski crystal pendants for sale in more vivid shades of yellow and orange. These items are great for making fiery statement pieces that grab people’s attention. Whether you’re making topaz jewelry for gifts, for a business, or just for yourself, you’re sure to be pleased with the end result.

Making your own jewelry is a fun and rewarding way to express your personal style. Not only is it a great way to save money, but it’s also a fun way to show off your creative side. In this article, we will be showing you how to make a beautiful gold-filled necklace with Swarovski crystals. This project is perfect for the beginner jewelry maker and only requires a few simple steps. So gather your supplies and let’s get started!
Let’s Get Started!
To make a gold-filled necklace with Swarovski crystals, you will need the following supplies:
Gold-filled beads
Stringing wire
Swarovski crystals
Jump rings
Crimp beads (#417 or #419)
Chain nose pliers
Cutter pliers
Smasher pliers
Round nose pliers
Clasps
Design board
Step 1: To start, lay out the beads and crystals in your desired pattern on the design board or another soft surface to avoid damage.
Step 2: Cut the stringing wire or thread about 6” longer than your necklace length.
Step 3: Next, pick up the beads and crystals one by one and start threading your stringing wire through the center until you are finished with all.
Step 4: Once all of the beads are in place, use a pair of chain nose pliers to attach a jump ring to each end of the wire.
Step 5: Finally, take your clasp and add it to one end of the wire. Then use round nose pliers to crimp the clasp in place. Do the same thing on the other end of the wire.
And that’s it! You’ve now created a beautiful gold-filled beads necklace with Swarovski crystals.
Some helpful tips –
When stringing the beads and crystals, make sure that you leave enough slack in the wire so that the necklace can be easily put on and taken off.
If you are finding it difficult to thread the wire through the beads and crystals, try using a needle to help make the process easier.
When attaching the jump rings, make sure that they are securely closed so that they don’t come undone.
Make one of our most popular Swarovski necklaces!
At Crystal Findings, we sell beautiful necklaces created with various combinations of the beads and findings available in our store. Our customers often ask us how to create these necklaces. They may want to make it for themselves or gifting, with variations in colors or beads, or they may want to make these beautiful designs in bulk and sell them.
In the given pattern, the length of this necklace will come out to be 18 inches. To make it longer or shorter, you can adjust the number of beads accordingly.
